Here at Brooklands we pride ourselves in Music throughout the school. Due to our hard work and commitment in the subject our school has been awarded the Derbyshire City & County Music Partnership Quality Mark for the second time running. Our most recent being in Spring 2013 where the Music co-ordinator attended a presentation ceremony at The Derby Assembly Rooms to collect the award.
Music lessons start as soon as children enter Nursery and take place on a weekly basis throughout all the three Key Stages where children are taught and encouraged to Perform, Compose, Listen and Appraise.
All lessons in Brooklands Primary School Music Scheme of Work are taken from the published scheme ‘Music Express’. Music Express provides teaching activities that are imaginative, inspiring and fun. It has been written especially for classroom teachers and is
- well planned
- fully resourced, and
- no music reading is required.
Music Express fulfils the requirements of the Music National Curriculum of England.
Learning with Music Express, children will gain a broad and balanced musical education. They will
- learn about and sing songs from around the world including the British Isles
- learn about music from different periods and genres
- enjoy music lessons with a balance of listening, composing, performing and appraising.
A steady progression plan has been built into Music Express, both within each book and from one year to the next, ensuring consistent musical development. Each unit is divided into six, weekly lessons, which are intended to be taught over a half term.
Opportunities are identified throughout for evaluating the children’s work and monitoring their progress.
All children who take part in instrumental lessons or choir from Year Two upwards are given the opportunity to perform in special assemblies, at local venues and Music Evenings throughout the year.
Our star of the Week Assembly takes place on a Friday where a child in each class is recognised for achieving something in the previous week. Children across the school are invited to showcase their talent in this assembly and perform in front of the rest of the school.
At the end of each term we have a Special Assembly joined by all children in the school. Here the choir sing, Recorder Clubs play and children having peripatetic lessons perform in small groups. This is also the case at our Music Evenings where parents are invited to come along and watch their child sing and play.
We also perform locally. We visit a local Daycare centre each Christmas and sing at their open day and we also sing carols at a local residential home. Each year we are also asked to sing carols at the Tesco Superstore to their customers Christmas shopping.
We are continually working to improve Music at Brooklands to expand our childrens’ knowledge, understanding and musicianship further.
